How to Stay Valuable as an Engineering Manager?
Checklist to stay relevant as Engineering Manager
Ask yourself the following questions:
(If the answer is anything other than "yes", you have work to do 🌱)
1. People want to work FOR you
You have to be seen as a credible leader → everyone has to find their own way to do it - for me, it is "staying technical" so I can understand and appreciate the work of my DRs
2. People want to work WITH you
You need to play nicely with your peers → sort out the your relations with your peers, you have to be a good collaborator to show value of your own and "sell" your team
3. People want you to work FOR THEM
You want people to say "I want this person to lead my team" about you → be seen, be engaged. You as a leader you are the company, you represent the company, and they need to want you to represent them + be good at executing their ideas
